Exterior Intersect of Space: The Body (Un)Comforable

Sofia Coppola is a successful Actress, Screenwriter and Director, with a unique post modern take on culture, history and our ever changing society. She has directed movies like, The Bling Ring, Marie Antoinette, Somewhere (which wasn't my favourite but was nice none the less) and has won prestigious awards for her original screenplay: Lost in Translation.
At all the award shows held annually every year, one thing that is always seemingly over looked is the art direction and graphic design of the title sequences. Some of my personal favourites include The Great Gatsby, Spider-man, any of Wes Andersons films and many others, but none quite compare to Peter Miles

He has done the title sequences for all of Sofia Cappola's films and has done them with great taste and purpose. I love the bold use of colour and the interesting typography, that carries the message of the movie in one easy to understand manner. I wish I could have a movie made of my life and have him do the title because it would be ferociously pink and wonderful - like candy floss or flying. His unique style paired with devilishly daring soundtracks and camera motions are what make me eager to see the story on the screen unfold.

Probably the most exciting thing is that Anna Sophia Robb and Evan Peters have teamed up with Ms. Sofia Copolla and are adapting Hans Christian Andersons' The Little Mermaid into a live action, post modern movie filled with love and the age old coming of age story of Self-discovery, and I cant wait. There's something about the idea of being a mermaid that I personally love and having Copolla make it into a movie is just the cherry on top!

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones

Last night, I went to see the Premier of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones and it was the most amazing movie I have ever seen in my life and I cant wait to read the books and also see the next one which I hope they make, even though it bombed at the Box Office in America.

Let's all just take a minute to think about what we're doing as people. We're ruining things for people because were all trying to shove things into little boxes called 'Similarity' and I would personally like it to stop, thanks. Not only has everyone been trying to classify this movie as 'Another Twilight Disaster' but I'm shocked to see that it has worked.

Not having gone to the movie with any premise as to what awaited me when the film started rolling, I actually got to see and experience the movie, and the storyline for what it was.
There was no lame, 'I can't live without you so let me lie in the forest for three days or stare out the window because I'm dense'. No. there was real conflict and aspiration and character development throughout the film.
The storyline followed Clary trying to find her Mother and trying to navigate the waters of what seems to be a complicated family relationship.
The love aspect of the movie was a nice touch, and the Love Triangle best friend thing was a classic and quite frankly unavoidable - I mean, everyone knew it, even Clary - that's why she kept denying it.

Clary is the protagonist of the series, a strong headed; brave, young girl who has been thrown into the crazy mixed up world below New York City. Besides being a bad-ass demon-hunting chick, who hates the idea of unnecessarily looking like a skankily clad hooker to fit in with the Goth Scene, she also enjoys poetry readings.
Yes! Finally a cultured young woman who knows what she wants and isn't afraid to fight for it, or her family! Bella Swan you suck because all you could do was make a forcefield with your mind and you couldn't even do that right. Bitch.

I think that its a great new representation of the supernatural world without it being lame Vampire - Werewolf fights. Even when there are vampires, there are loads of them, fighting like crazy in a dining room. A DINNINGROOM. If that doesn't freak you out then you're broken. It's like they invite you to dinner and you're the dinner. Also, they actually burned in the sun.
Uhm, do I even have to mention the demonic dog/snake/body goo crawling around trying to eat Clary in the first scene...?

This whole Mortal Instruments series is pretty darn fab-tastic if you ask me. Dark, sinister, slightly creepy and weird but I think the world needs it after the horror that Stephanie Meyer made Vampires into... and that's not horror in a good way.

Having said that, let me just tell you a couple things you may not know about TMI: City of Bones.

  1. It's Great.
  2. It's as if Star Wars, 300, True Blood, Wolverine and Harry Potter all got together ha a massive orgies and made this movie/franchise/book/amazement.
  3. There's some crazy background story going on, which actually has been translated well into a movie - not just some shiny vampires looking at some girl cause she smells good. Ugh. The storyline has many different elements, and lets be honest, there isn't enough time in a movie to accurately show each and everyone to it's full and wonderful potential so they've kept the important stuff. I mean the series is six books!
  4. It's damned well not about the Vampires!
  5. Shaddowhunters are half angel half human and have sworn to protect Humankind from Downworlders. Also, the Mundanes (Humans) can't see them which makes for some really hilarious/cool scenes when the humans are like "Whaaaa?". When I grow up I want to be a Shaddowhunter.
  6. Jace Wayland (Not sure if this is his name or if he's Johnathan Wayland or Jace Lightwood) either way he drips with sarcastic humour which I highly appreciate.
  7. Classic the only Mundane along for the ride seems to be good ol' Nathan from Misfits putting on an America Accent. Still he has really good bone structure, and makes for a great Nerdy Best Friend/vampire/I hope he becomes a vampire.
  8. This.
  9. Jamie Campbell Bower.
  10. Lily Collins and her fantastic hair. Makes me wish I was a redhead lets be honest.

I don't really want to think about the whole Cassandra Clare Fan Fiction debacle because it makes me sad and I want to live an innocent, ignorant naive life where it doesn't exist, even though I spent about four and a half hours doing as much digging as humanly possible and trying to find the 'Draco' Fanfic Novels to read with little to no success. Ah well... I will still read the books and watch the movies and try not to think about the terrible reality that is the Cassandra Clare Plagiarism/Draco - Ginny Romance that inspired the Mortal Instruments series.

Cant wait for the next one.

Dinner and a Movie

I watch a load of movies, and every so often I feel like I'm the best film critic in the world so I tell the internet about them.

Dirty Girl:
"And Remember, nobody likes a Dirty Girl"
This is probably one of the best movies I've seen in a long time.
Set in 1950's Oklahoma a young girl whose life is being turned upside down by her Mothers new boyfriend and the prospect of having to share her bedroom with a new Step Sister decides to run away to her estranged Father across the southern states of America with her new friend, Clark. The movie is a crazy whirlwind of adventure, family and friendship with a damned good soundtrack. You'll cry, you'll laugh and you'll be singing at the top of your lungs from the couch.

Best Exotic Marigold Hotel:
"Everything will be all right in the end, if it's not all right, It's not the end"
A touching movie that follows the first few months of Old People going on a new adventure in India to escape their dull lives in England. They move to the "Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" owned by a young, charismatic guy trying to live up to the expectations of his mother and older brothers. You see how the characters change and come to terms with the prospect of their lives coming to an end. Tragic, Romantic, Heart Warming Suspenceful this movie has it all! I loved it. Then we ate Indian food which was delicious.

To Rome With Love:
Set in the beautiful city of Roma, Woody Allen takes us on a well written trip through young love in its many different forms, from Newly Weds to the Betrothed and a lovely love triangle in the middle between old friends and a boyfriend. While, for most of the scenes including the old architect, I was pretty confused and had to read a load of subtitles I really enjoyed this film. I'm not an avid Woody Allen film watcher or lover- This being the second one I've seen- I do have an appreciation for his random creativity and for allowing us, as the viewers, the chance to see the difference between film talk and conversations between people in real life. No one talks like Edward and Bella. I was glad for the wake up call.

Avengers
I actually wished I had a pen and paper with me while I was watching this film, because there were so many parts that I actually loved. I loved the humour and the wit in Logys scenes, the subtle hints to how out of tune Captain America is with modern society and of course all the fantastic action and fighting and Robert Downy Jr.
I cant wait to see the next one and even think Ill be renting the pre-quells and watching all of them too.

An Indie Kinda Love

The Art of Getting By.
"We live alone, we die alone. Everything else is just an illusion"

It's the sweetest love story, about a boy who has spent his whole life just getting by. Just before the end of
his high school career his teachers threaten him with suspension because he hasnt handed in any work. He makes friends with his love interest, Sallly, who teaches him how to be a better person and channel his artistic talent. Wank, wank wank. Its filmed so beautifully, and has the best sound track in the world. It make my heart smile and my eyes leak.
The only downside is Freddie Highmores terrible American accent. They really should just let hi be British. Emma Roberts looks better with brown hair.

"You're going to have to start using that brain of yours, to access that talent of yours, to show that beautiful soul of yours."

Dedication:
"I've never been good at finding things, but I'm really good at loosing things"

One of the best indie movies I have ever seen. I'll sacrifice my left, big toe and say that its even better than 500 Days of Summer. Its rare in movies that you see such a well developed character that is portrayed in such a fantastic way. It starts as porn. Just a warning.

It's Kind of a Funny Story:

Craig: "Do you like music?"
Noelle: "Do you like breathing?"

Craig checks himself into an adult phsychiatric ward, and find a reason to live again. Doesn't that sound beautiful? He finds a lovelly lady who is the same age and they start up an unconventional romance. I love the way its filmed, especially the amazing concert scene randomly in the middle. That's my favourite part.
When I watched this movie, I was very depressed and it made me feel slightly more optimistic and excited about life.

Crazy. Stupid. Love:

"It's like you're Photoshoped!"

Ryan Gosling shirtless. Need I say more?
It's such an amazing movie, I wont spoil it. Steve Carel is so funny. Emma Stone is sexy and hilerial. Ryan Gosling is shirtless and its jaut all round cute, and wonderful and amazing.

Friends with Benefits and No Strings Attached:

They're essentially the same movie, although No Strings Attached, with Aston Kutcher and Natalie Portman is so much better. The only reason I watched Friends with Bennifits is because Mila Kunis is a babe.
The best part is the flash mob, although it was fantastically scripted - the flirtacious banter between the two is reminicent of a real couple trying to fight the urge to fall inove- you do, almost, believe it

No Strings Attached

Friends With Benefits

These are just a few of my favorite movies/ Movies I've recently watched.

The Perks of Working in a DVD Store:

Dear Jozi,

You wouldn't believe I'd ever get off my lazy ass (and the internet) but I have.
I have found myself a shitty job in Melville.
Yes, You guessed it! My life has now become a Meg Cabot book.

I work in this alternative art house DVD store in Melville for R20 an hour. It's not much but there are a few perks to it (:

  1. Free DVDs
  2. Extra moneys for my dreams of a camera, Motorcycle and Hip bone Surface Piercings.
  3. Meeting strange people
  4. Free Internet.
  5. Getting paid to watch movies all day long
  6. Blogging for free!
Basically I get paid to do nothing and watch movies... and get hit on by creepy men.

I now understand why people who work in DVD stores are such stoners. It's cause there really isnt that much to do around here. Movies get boring and people come in waves.

With Love,
Kathryn

Dear Jozi,

Isn't it enough with the chilly overcast-ness yet? I'm sick of being hauled up inside the house watching movies all day. Seriously. I've watched like 50 movies in the past three days. Most of them were good. But this, this was defiantly the best.

It's called "Daydream Nation". And it's amazing.

Here's the trailer:

"Seventeen-year-ancient Caroline Wexler (Kat Dennings) іѕ facing a teenager’s nightmare: hеr widowed father hаѕ wеnt thеm frοm thе hυɡе city tο a tіnу town іn thе middle οf nowhere. Whеn Caroline realizes ѕhе hаѕ nothing іn common wіth thе burnout losers іn hеr nеw school ѕhе pursues thе one person whο excites hеr interest – hеr handsome young teacher, Mr. Anderson (Josh Lucas). A bizarre Ɩіkе triangle ensues between Caroline, Mr. Anderson, аnԁ a sweet, bυt troubled classmate (Reece Thompson). Featuring a hit indie soundtrack іn thіѕ mash-up οf thе bizarre аnԁ thе ɡοrɡеουѕ, Daydream Nation іѕ a coming-οf-age tаƖе fοr thе 21st century."

Not to give the whole story away, but you should definatly watch it. EEEP!

Although the actual movie was amazing. And the plot was pretty good, and the acting was decent, and it won a whole bunch of awards n shizz. Thurston was my favorite.
Isn't he the hottest guy in the world?

I think he's pretty damn fine. Why aren't there guys this hot in Jozi?
They all live in Pretoria and have terrible Afrikaans accents.
BLEHG!

With Love,
Kathryn
