Music Mondays: Gangsterdam

Hey Everybody!
It's that time of year again! Music Monday!
Introducing my new favourite band and eye candy - Gangsterdam!

Saw them last Friday at Another-Days Prom night.
Its the first time I've actually made a concious decision to watch them perform live and made an effort to listen to their tunes, but damn are they good. They have a really cool sound and some sexy ass musicians that make up this little Bandy Band. Yup I said it. Bandy band.

While I'm not such a fan of this music video shot by Crash Car Burns own Bugsy Barnes, it's cute and endearing and trying to be 'Cool and Out There' but the whole Sexy Naked Chicks with Animal Heads Thing has been done to death. It's a good coming out video for them, and with only 400 likes on Facebook, Im sure it's nice to have friends in high places. These guys will shoot to the top of the charts with good old Matthew Mole and Shortstraw in no time at all.

I actually can't wait to see these guys live again or to hear what they'll be doing next.

Check out their video:

The lead singer looks like a boy i knew back in High School. Ha!

Cant We Be Royals? - American Royalty - Sam Spatt

Looking through his portfolio its hard to believe he's only 25. Amongst his many works in portraiture, illustration and game character design.
He was personally commissioned by Donald Glover - Childish Gambino - for his new Album, Royalty.

"American Royalty"

Excuse me while I try and make something of my life.

Read more about how much I like Sam Spratt's Art Works here.
Make sure you listen to Childish Gambino's music, I've linked it here, because he's really cool, and one of the best underground rappers around. You could also just watch Community, where he's an actor and frequently raps in Spanish.

Skull&Heart

Trouble & Daughter are a small band from Toronto, Canada. I found their stuff on Youtube and fell in love almost immediately. Their simple melodies and sweet harmonies make rainy days seem like something to live for. With a name like trouble and daughter, one can only expect to expect a little bit of rough mixed in with some subtle melody of love. I think the music really comes alive through Jenni and James' vocal play.
Their EP, which is self produced includes musical talent from a few of their friends along the way.
Their eclectic sound and chilled vibe really brings some thing trendy to their music.
Check out some of their videos, here's mine:
Favourite Song:

Okay, I'm done obsessing over these amazing cats now.

Happy Music and Handstands

Beach Party.
Not a frequent activity in my life but definitely blasting through my speakers at any chance I get. I love their great 1960's sound and the cool lyrics (I think they're actually writing about my life), but most importantly it's music that makes me happy and want to do handstands and have a party on the beach and maybe do some handstands there too.
Not only are they amazing and fantastic and everyone should love them but they're hilarious and you should read their Facebook Page about section because it's great.
Anyway enough about me...
Chekkit out:

Also, be a doll and download their album here.

Story of My Life

Except with out the crazy dance moves and the ability to pull sweet ass at clubs.

Woke up to this beauty and then watched it like eight times and told all my friends about it and then they told me that i need to get a life and then I made this blog post about it and now I'm seriously considering the direction my life is taking. Not everyone has One Direction you know.

#whydoialwaysmakeawkwardpopculturereferencesthatnooneunderstands #whatislife

Also, after I facebook stalked this guy I realised that we have like 12 mutual friends. #supercreep

Its pretty cool. (the video I mean)
You should watch it.

Walk Off the Earth

Youtube is a wonderful place, which I fear I have only just discovered. Before I used to look at a few things, maybe check back every so often to the same places and not quite realise the wonder that is withheld in the depths of this magical cavern of creativity. I never fully understood what was happening on the internet and could never really be apart of it fully. I feel like I've been changing that the last couple of weeks though - through the wondrous world of Fan Fiction and the depths of blogging and internet magazines.

You can follow my Youtube channel by clicking here :D

One of the best discoveries I've made in the last couple of days had been the band called
Walk Off The Earth. I remember seeing a video of theirs early in 2012, but didn't take the time to note down the name and so it went unnoticed in my life. This was their cover of "Somebody that I Used to Know" by Gotye, where the five of them played one guitar. Their video and unconventional styling had over 35 Million views in under two weeks. Almost a year and a half later and they're taking Youtube by storm again with their Cover of "Royals" by LORDE.

The Music Video Cover for Royals is the five band mates playing fur ukuleles and other percussion instruments in a new and innovative way.

The most fascinating part of their Covers of other artists is the way that they do it and the Music Videos they make - this is probably the reason for them being as cool as they are.

I highly encourage you to watch their music videos because they are probably the best things ever, in the world. Ever.

&Kathryn

P.S. Maybe I should go platinum blonde.

P.P.S. I judge how much I like people and music based on hair. If yah aint got good hair yah just aint cool enough, and that's the gospel truth.

A Reason.

There are only a few people in the whole world who can make some sort of impression on your life, and for this past year there have been a few people who have done that, and I'm scared that they wont ever be as involved in my life as I would like them to be, and then the change will stop. I've realised, through my many existential life crisis on the back seats of buses that I'm yearning for people to change my life in some sort of significant way. Maybe I can't realise it now, an maybe I never will, but I'm sure that ill never stop looking.
As for my own purpose in life, I want to make a difference, either to people on a significantly personal level or to people on a larger scale. I want to make things better, in the world, in my life, in my community, maybe in others.
I want people to realise that things do happen for a reason, sometimes big and sometimes small. Maybe it will be something someone says to you in passing or the way that they treat you over a long period of time that causes you to make small changes in your life for the better.

I'd just like to have someone care enough about me, to see what happens to me in the future as I do about other people.

I feel as though there haven't been people in a while that really need to be changed or need my help and that scares me. I feel terribly uncomfortable being in a bubble filled with people who  are all changing at the same rate as me and that are so self absorbed with their own amount of change that they have forgotten that sometimes people need a little push from their friends to have that. I feel as though we live in a bubble of things being controlled. Everything I do has to go through this man who sits behind a desk in a fancy office and doesn't really care about the people he's meant to be looking after. I feel like everything is planned put, but not by me. Like I have no control over my own life and that's freaking me out. As much as i like routine and knowing what's going to happen, I like knowing that I have decided what's going to happen and have made the choices based on an informed decision. I don't like not knowing, and more importantly, not knowing why.

Now that I've had a weird moment all over the internet, here's a great song to cheer you up and to think to.

tlc

Sometimes I ust feel unbelievably unloved in the world, and whilst stalking all the silly people I feel the need to stalk all over the internet I came across two little girls who made the whole world seem a little brighter.

They're called Lennon and Maisy Stella and they're the cutest most adorable things ever, I just wanna nom on them all day.

Lennon is a twelve year old, musical genius, with cute glasses that make me wish I had eye problems, just to be as fashionable as her. Her little sister that plays guitar like she's had many more years to practice, is only eight and often sings back up or harmony in the songs she performs with her sister,. but has an incredible voice and a load of confidence for someone as young as she is.  So take a listen and I promise you'll be singing along in no time.
This is a cover they did of an amazing song, it's called "Call Your Girlfriend" by Robyn.

Falling Apart

There are some days when the whole world seems to be falling apart, and before you know what's happening you're crying your eyes out on a bus, your friends don't want to talk to you and there's an ass
hole who just won't shut up.
It's days like these that We can really thank the rest of the universe for the friends who do want to talk to you, and cuddle you, serenade you with songs from musicals, and in between your sobs you smile a little, hug them back, nod and let a little giggle escape your lips.
Here's a song to remind you all to think about the good things.
Because, at the end of the day, its the whispered good nights to room mates, and the kisses from your friends on the cheek, the reassuring pat on the back when you're upset, and that catchy tune that wakes you up, reminding you that it's a new day.

Isitutututu?

If you had a Rand for every time I've said Desmond and the Tutus on this blog you'd probably be a millionaire. They've released their new singles from their new album Mnusic, and they even have  few new videos on youtube. I absolutely love them, and I wish that stupid Look and Listen had had their CD before I left.

I want to be him. I'm working on my harmonica skills, and by the time i get home, I'll probably be as good as him.

Dear Jozi,
I'm feeling rather nostalgic for the early mornings when I would bust huge missions getting out of bed to make tea, braving the cold of the kitchen floor, forcing myself to get dressed for school. Trying to explain the best past of you to foreigners is so difficult.
They don't understand the beauty of being able to go to The Boheimian  or Tipsy Gypsi every night, for a drink or some sweet tunes to the bitter taste of Zamelek. They could never even begin to understand the concept of being able to drive a little ways out of the city down to Splashy Fen, or having RAMfest not more than 4 minutes from your house. They will never understand the Jagermeister girls, or the thought of POGO pits. they will never understand the kind of mutual understanding of gig goers, to llet you go to the front because you're short. They will never appreciate going stage diving at Cool Runnings Fourways and our constant protests and petitions to let the municipality not close down our pubs and bars. I miss only needing to know that its the purple house on the corner and one street down from the Wimpy. I miss
I miss our drunken escapades through the streets of Melville for Joburg Burning and staying out just those few more minutes to cath the last acts in the form of 340ml and Fire Through the Window.
So here's a video, that pretty much sums up the beauty of our Country, our city, the people that we all to easily forget come from the same place as us. We forget that we're united under the seven colours that make up our flag, those seven colours that greet me when I wake up in the morning. Weather we speak Zulu or English or Afrikaans the gesture for a lighter remains the same in every language. We forget that we're all part of the same generation. We forget that we're fighting for the same cause ansd no matter how hard we try, racisim is still a big part of life for us. People here dont understand the kind of society we come from, where you have shacks and mansions on the same streets. Where the languages of Africa are all around you and you have no choice but to listen past sounds and clicks but to peoples eyes, their hands their emotions that they're pouring into their words, trying to express themselves.
They don't understand.

I Listen to this in the Shower

"Don't be shy, be brave little champion, It's better to live, than to hide."

One thing I loved about Camp and basically being an insomniac for a month was waking up at about 5:30 and taking some of the best showers Id ever taken. Since my life.

Sometimes they'd be uncontrollably hot or cold, but mostly they were great.
What made them so amazing wasn't walking out the bathroom, lovely and clean to sit on my rock and drink a cup of tea and wait for my fellow Maddies to awake, but the quiet, peacefulness of the bathroom whilst showering.

Also, being able to play my music and actually hear it. Without all the interruptions of people.

Why am I blogging about my shower habits you may ask?
Just so I have an excuse to tell you about:

This is one of my favorite songs.
ONLY ONE.
Wich means there are about a hundred more.

Dear Jozi,

Have you ever experienced the amazing-ness that is Shortstraw?
Maybe you have, maybe you haven't. I wouldn't know, seeing as no body ever tells me these things.
Just for arguments sake, lets say you haven't.

The song "LYSAGFY" is the best song. Please go listen to it right now. and then read the rest of this post.

I now own your shortstaw virginity.
If you try hard enough, that rhymes.

This is shortstraw:
They have a song about Keanu Reeves. That should be enough for you people. But I'll tell you why I really like their music. It's because its edgy and amazing and I could just listen to it all day long and never get sick of it. That's how amazing it is. They don't give a flying fuck about any of the lyrics which makes their songs awesome.

Shortstraw play music.
Music that sounds like puppies being born.
Music that sounds like protesters outside an abortion clinic.
Music that sounds like church bells ringing on a crisp Sunday morning.
Music that sounds like angels playing scrabble.
Music that sounds like a married couple fighting through a thin wall of your apartment.
Now, doesn't that sound nice?
If you don't believe me, here's a video to prove my point.

This is their first official music video from their official album (below) that released earlier in July this year. I was fortunate enough to be there for this, and let me tell you, it was the most amazing experience I've ever had. Unfortunately  for fear of my camera committing suicide, I didn't take any pictures.

Go fuck yourself.

With Love,

Dear Jozi

Let me educate you.
Just quickly.
On the most amazing band in the ENTIRE universe.
Yes.
The whole place.

They're called Desmond and the tutus, and they will blow your mother flipping mind. They're a local band, originally from Pretoria right damn here in South Africa. They played an epic gig on Friday night at the Town Hall/ Converse Halloween party, and everyone was going completely insane, it was so sick.
They play the most amazing, jamming, rock your freaking socks off music you will ever listen to/ dance to in your whole life. That's how amazing they are.

This is my absolute favorite song, and I vow that if the universe permits me I will name my daughter Peter. That's how much I love this song. Also, that's how much I love Desmond. They just make everything seem right with the universe.

Desmond and the tutus- Peter

Those are just some more pictures for you little trolls to feast your eyes on. They're from the Desmond and the tutus blog which can be found by clicking here

The photographer is:  Eduan Kitching. Hes an amazing photographer, kinda like my role model right now. Check out more of his work on his website by clicking his name (:

Also, just for good measure, you should check out their Facebook page, become a fan, and take a listen to some of their other rocking tunes. Maybe even checkout their upcoming gig in November?

It'll be a party!

Dear Jozi

There's too many boys out there that'll break your heart.

This is probably one of my favorite songs at the moment.

I know I said I loved You but I'm thinking that I was wrong,
I'm the first to admit that I'm still pretty young,
I never meant to hurt you when I wrote you ten love songs.
...
My mind has fucked me over more times than any man could ever know.
Maybe I should give up, Give in. Give up trying to be thin.
Give up and turn into my mother, God knows I love her.
I'm sorry to which ever man should meet my sorry state.
...
I will never love a man, cause love and pain go hand in hand, and I cant do it, Again.
...
So we stay up late one night, to try and get our problems right,
But I couldn't get into his head just what was going through my mind,
...
I've got this friend that sounds just like him,
He's the man I'd leave you for
The man that I just adore, like you.
The same man that turns to me,
and says: "I've got to tell you how you feel,
If God could make the perfect girl for me, it would be you."
...
Michael told me not to tell,
how much do you love your fella?
I don't know, more everyday.
...
Not in this new romantic way.

I'll always be your first love.
You'll always be my first love

Love,
Kathryn

Dear Jozi

"This one goes out to all the lonely hearts,
When it feels like it just fell apart,
Wishing you could give it one more shot,
oh oh
Tell your friends you never wanna leave
Oh when things go wrong, You'll be running for cover
When you're lost, you'll die alone
When things go wrong, commit to another
You've gotta cross your heart, and find your place
This one goes out to all the lonely hearts"

So this is Fire Through The Window.
They are amazing, and I just wanna be the lead singer lady (Sinead Denis) , because shes so pretty and amazing.

MMM... The hottest guy. Look at his hotness. I would lick his chest.
Om? NOMNOMNOM

And now that you've seen how amazingly awesome and hot they are...

LISTEN TO HOW AMAZING THEY SOUND!
