Story of My Life

Except with out the crazy dance moves and the ability to pull sweet ass at clubs.

Woke up to this beauty and then watched it like eight times and told all my friends about it and then they told me that i need to get a life and then I made this blog post about it and now I'm seriously considering the direction my life is taking. Not everyone has One Direction you know.

#whydoialwaysmakeawkwardpopculturereferencesthatnooneunderstands #whatislife

Also, after I facebook stalked this guy I realised that we have like 12 mutual friends. #supercreep

Its pretty cool. (the video I mean)
You should watch it.

Well, this is awkward.

This an awkward picture of me.
Jumping.
lol
Thanks internet, for sharing my pain.

So its from the Facebook page of Two guys with Glasses, and I think its the first picture that anyone has taken of me at these gigs. I always see everyone else's and they all look super cool and high def but you know, whatever.

Guess where I was? Jokes i'll just tell you. It was this thing called Boosh, like the 18th one or something ridiculous like that. Yeah man, ShortStraw played, Desmond, Wrestlerish, Yo Grapes... Earl Grey and Croquet... those guys...

Pretty chilled out, had a party, kinda socialised with people, maybe. What even is socialising, and how can one tell if it has been successful or not...
I'll tell you about my cool shirt some other time, (and also about the three word conversation I had with Shane Durant)

Im trying to keep my fan-girling low key.
Don't take anything I say seriously, I can't even.

Illustration Contemplation

This afternoon I wanted to do something fun and creative and then this happened!
They're posters inspired by some of my favourite South African Bands.
I guess I ate too many cupcakes and drank too much caffeine in the form of Five Roses, either that, or I'm a super lameo. Classic right.
Whatevr.
I'm gonna make more noww...

Couch Potato - Shortstraw

A little bit of light hearted, indie music to get this whole show on the road.
This song pretty much describes my life.

I pretty much love Shortstraw. I've seen them quite a few times since I turned 15 and would spend my nights trawling bars and Live Music Venues, being caught up as a part of the unbelievable city night life that Johannesburg has to offer.

The most memorable time I ever saw them live was at Cool Runnings in Fourways. They were playing the gig with none other than Desmond and the Tutus and The City Bowl Mizers. It was a crazy-amazing show and a night I wouldn't soon forget - because that was the night I went Stage Diving.

The crowd was insane and absolutely wild as I stood on stage, the blinding lights shining in my eyes. The people were pulsating along with the music jumping up and down in rhythm to the band playing their well rehearsed set and dripping sweat all over the stage. I was with a complete stranger, tall and with dark, wildly curly hair. I looked up at him, because he was so tall, uncertainly but he smiled reassuringly and shouted "GO!" and pushed me to the edge of the stage. I jumped, free falling for what felt like a life time into the crowd with nothing but a the hope that some one would catch me.
It was amazing.
I felt like I was flying.
The floor was hard and slightly slippery under my feet. I fought to regain my balance as I pushed my way back to the front of the crowd and joined the sweaty, smelly writhing mass of people that we're jumping and dancing to the beat of the band.

Listen.

Tussen Stasies

19 March 2012

Dear Jozi,
I'm feeling rather nostalgic for the early mornings when I would bust huge missions getting out of bed to make tea, braving the cold of the kitchen floor, forcing myself to get dressed for school. Trying to explain the best past of you to foreigners is so difficult.
They don't understand the beauty of being able to go to The Boheimian  or Tipsy Gypsi every night, for a drink or some sweet tunes to the bitter taste of Zamelek. They could never even begin to understand the concept of being able to drive a little ways out of the city down to Splashy Fen, or having RAMfest not more than 4 minutes from your house. They will never understand the Jagermeister girls, or the thought of POGO pits. they will never understand the kind of mutual understanding of gig goers, to llet you go to the front because you're short. They will never appreciate going stage diving at Cool Runnings Fourways and our constant protests and petitions to let the municipality not close down our pubs and bars. I miss only needing to know that its the purple house on the corner and one street down from the Wimpy. I miss
I miss our drunken escapades through the streets of Melville for Joburg Burning and staying out just those few more minutes to cath the last acts in the form of 340ml and Fire Through the Window.
So here's a video, that pretty much sums up the beauty of our Country, our city, the people that we all to easily forget come from the same place as us. We forget that we're united under the seven colours that make up our flag, those seven colours that greet me when I wake up in the morning. Weather we speak Zulu or English or Afrikaans the gesture for a lighter remains the same in every language. We forget that we're all part of the same generation. We forget that we're fighting for the same cause ansd no matter how hard we try, racisim is still a big part of life for us. People here dont understand the kind of society we come from, where you have shacks and mansions on the same streets. Where the languages of Africa are all around you and you have no choice but to listen past sounds and clicks but to peoples eyes, their hands their emotions that they're pouring into their words, trying to express themselves.
They don't understand.

Dear Jozi,

Have you ever experienced the amazing-ness that is Shortstraw?
Maybe you have, maybe you haven't. I wouldn't know, seeing as no body ever tells me these things.
Just for arguments sake, lets say you haven't.

The song "LYSAGFY" is the best song. Please go listen to it right now. and then read the rest of this post.

I now own your shortstaw virginity.
If you try hard enough, that rhymes.

This is shortstraw:
They have a song about Keanu Reeves. That should be enough for you people. But I'll tell you why I really like their music. It's because its edgy and amazing and I could just listen to it all day long and never get sick of it. That's how amazing it is. They don't give a flying fuck about any of the lyrics which makes their songs awesome.

Shortstraw play music.
Music that sounds like puppies being born.
Music that sounds like protesters outside an abortion clinic.
Music that sounds like church bells ringing on a crisp Sunday morning.
Music that sounds like angels playing scrabble.
Music that sounds like a married couple fighting through a thin wall of your apartment.
Now, doesn't that sound nice?
If you don't believe me, here's a video to prove my point.

This is their first official music video from their official album (below) that released earlier in July this year. I was fortunate enough to be there for this, and let me tell you, it was the most amazing experience I've ever had. Unfortunately  for fear of my camera committing suicide, I didn't take any pictures.

Go fuck yourself.

With Love,

Dear Jozi

This past weekend would have marked the sixth time I've seen Desmond and the Tutus this year. the first being at "Thornfest" and they were probably the only reason I went, and the last being the 5 Gum Summer Sessions. Because Cape Town stole "Rocking the Gardens" from us, these guys put together one of the best gigs this year.

It took place on the roof of The Alex Theater. There was fake grass and if you got there early enough, people were sitting having a couple of drinks and just hanging out. The high building walls and the fake grass made it so urban yet, summery and Cape Town-y. It was well worth the visit.

Of course, it wouldn't have been the same without the bands.
Desmond and the Tutus blew everyone away just in time, because the police showed up to shut the whole thing down. Darn party poopers.

Shortstraw was amazing as always, with their acoustic rock sounds that just get the crowd going. They're definatly one of my favorite bands to jam to, mostly because their music is sweet and the lyrics are just silly.

It was my first time seeing Rambling Bones, and I was not disappointed. I've had their first CD for a while and their beautifuly sung duet of "Baby Shoes" never failed to make me happy again. I've attached it below so that you can feel the musical magic and the warm feeling it brings for yourself :D

Rambling Bones - Baby Shoes

Unfortunately we arrived too late to see all the other bands but after doing some Facebook stalking I've decided that they're actually quite cool. I'll keep you posted on their gigs and music.

This is a photo from the back of the entire event. Amy and myself sat down to have a drink and I thought it was the most amazing thing. You can see the huge building behind the stage, which just reminded us all that partying under the stars in Jozi, isn't that bad.
Who needs Cape Town anyways?
They'd probably be to chilled to party like real rock stars.

At every Desmond gig I've been to, there's always those crazy people that do crazy things. This time, I met two girls who were determined to get on stage with them. The first went and played her harmonica with the lead singer to "Kiss you on the cheek" and the second, did an amazing stage dive/crowd surf. It was beautiful.

This is me and Amy, taking silly "Who are we?" pictures like total dweeeebs.
Every event needs one.
This was just after these silly little boys tried to hit on us, and before all these people made it their mission to find out how old we were. It was quite annoying really. But I had a great time with Amy, I really enjoy hanging out with her!

I saw a whole bunch of my Jews there too!
Jew spotting FTW!

Dear Jozi

Halloween Bitches.

So, I went to this Halloween party, and it was jam packed with people dressed so epicaly. The usual sluts could be spotted with their angel wings and halos among the sea of zombies. But there were a few people that had gone above and beyond the call of Halloween costumes and put on some amazing outfits. Before you get to excited, it wasn't me.

There was a guy (The guy from The comic Book Theory, whom I met, and was unbelievably starstruck because I love him) who dressed up as Nathan from Misfits.
There was another guy who I saw walking passed who was Napoleon Dynamite, and there was a guy who was  Where's Wally. My friend Abby was Edward scissor hands, which I thought was pretty rad. I on the other hand, always go as something lame, and non slutty. Like a save the world superhero. Oh well. Next year I'll be something epic.

There were some cool ass bands playing including: Shortstraw, The Stellas' and Desmond and the tutus. Not to mention the cool Drum n Bass room, The Dubstep room and all the DJ's like Sibot who made the walls shake till 4am.

Happy Halloween Everybody!

With Love,
KathrynWHAT?
